Understanding ABA

Scilla Behaviour Support Services in Fort St. John, British Columbia uses ABA, a research-based therapy that started in the 1960s. It uses ABCs in determining the motivation of a given behaviour:

              • A – Antecedent (What Happens Immediately Before the Behaviour)
              • B – Behaviour
              • C – Consequence (What Happens Immediately After a Behaviour)

ABA can be helpful for all children until they reach and throughout adulthood. It has been established that applying positive reinforcement, or when a behaviour is followed with a valuable reward, it is more likely that the behaviour will increase.  Rewards (also known as reinforcers) don't have to be items, or food! They can be things like motivational praise and other social interactions with others that occur in the natural environment,

There needs to be a lot more emphasis on what a child can do instead of what they cannot do.
